The benefits of olive oil

Olive oil is one of the pillars on which the Mediterranean diet is based, since it is the most commonly used fat in the Mediterranean diet. That is to say, it is used to season, dress and cook most of the foods that make up this diet, which is considered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is due, among other things, to the multiple benefits it has. In Life Length we tell you about them below:

STRENGHTENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The immune system is responsible for protecting our body from external pathogens. T-lymphocytes represent one of the actions of our immune system. It has been shown that the function of T lymphocytes can be enhanced by regular consumption of olive oil. They are especially relevant due to the global pandemic situation, as the presence of specific T-lymphocytes is indicative of immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. At Life Length we have recently added the “COVID Cellular Immunity Test based on the ELISPOT technique” to our catalog of tests, which analyzes T lymphocytes to determine a person’s cellular immunity to covid-19.

IT FAVORS THE DIGESTION PROCESS

The consumption of olive oil has different benefits related to the digestive process. First of all, it reduces gastric acidity. This is because it generates a protective film in the stomach that prevents acids from coming into contact with the walls of the stomach. Secondly, it facilitates the absorption of nutrients, making the digestive process more efficient. Finally, it has a satiating effect that prevents us from eating more than we should and the discomfort that comes with heavy digestion.

IT IS A WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

As always, everything has its nuance. It should be made clear that the consumption of olive oil must always be moderate in order to be beneficial to our health. Olive oil contains an oleic acid derivative that accelerates the metabolism. The faster the metabolism, the more energy demand it generates. This way we burn more calories and prevent some compounds from being converted into fat. This does not make it a miracle solution, so the diet must be complemented with different habits that favor slimming.

IT HELPS TO GET RID OF SOME STONES IN THE BODY

It is common to hear about kidney stones. These are the most famous, but there are other types of stones (or calculi) known as gallstones. These are formed when bile solidifies and accumulates, requiring surgical removal of the gallbladder if symptoms appear. Olive oil activates the gallbladder. This is responsible for containing the bile generated by the liver and aiding in the digestion process. For this reason, activating this organ facilitates the dissolution and consequently the elimination of stones.

IT PREVENTS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

Extra virgin olive oil contains several antioxidants and vitamins that, with a moderate daily consumption, help prevent cardiovascular diseases. One of the reasons is that it reduces the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and, at the same time, increases the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). High amounts of high cholesterol end up causing fat to build up in the arteries. When arteries are too clogged, they may not carry enough blood to the organs or they may rupture, leading to cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke.

DELAYS DERMATOLOGICAL AGING

As we have already mentioned, olive oil contains different antioxidants and vitamins that help slow skin deterioration and facilitate healing. Regular intake of extra virgin olive oil slows down aging, but its application on the skin also has beneficial properties: it nourishes and moisturizes. Of course, after application, you must allow your skin to react with the oil and then remove it. Keep in mind that before using it as a balm, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.

IT REDUCES THE EFFECTS OF HANGOVERS

In this section we are going to be clear: the most effective method to avoid hangovers is abstinence. However, if your alcohol consumption has gone beyond moderation, olive oil can become a very interesting ally. Popular tradition has always linked this liquid with the relief or even the remedy for hangovers, but the interesting thing is that there is a scientific explanation for these claims. When we ingest olive oil on an empty stomach, it forms a film that covers the walls of the stomach. In this way, alcohol is prevented from coming into contact with the stomach walls and producing the discomfort of a hangover. For this same reason it decreases the absorption of alcohol by our organism.

As you can see, it does not receive the nickname of liquid gold by chance. Olive oil has valuable properties that help maintain good health and you know what they say: health is priceless.
